History
The festival is named after Selborne’s famous Zig Zag Path which climbs up from the village to the top of Selborne Hanger. The path was cut in 1753 by naturalist and ornithologist Gilbert White with help from his brother. The views from the top are spectacular and climbing the Zig Zag is a highly recommended excursion for any visitor to Selborne.
The Zig Zag Festival was born in 2005 with the aim of promoting the village and its pubs along with local food producers, brewers and musicians. Only one pub - The Selborne Arms - remains in the village and the festival is split between here and the village hall with live music and a large range of ales and wine in both venues.
The festival runs from noon until midnight on the first Saturday in October. The evening sees lively headline music acts in both venues whereas the afternoon session in the village hall is a more relaxed, family friendly affair with a focus on folk and acoustic music acts.
Food is available in both venues throughout all sessions.
Although not intended as fundraiser any money raised is ploughed back into village community projects. Recent donations include resurfacing the village tennis court, kitchen refurbishment at the village hall and regular start-up funding for the annual Christmas Fair.
The Visit Selborne website contains more information about the beautiful & historic village of Selborne.
